Care and Feeding for Your New Board

Thank you for your purchase of a handcrafted hardwood board! The purpose of this document is to help you learn about your new board and how to care for it to ensure years of enjoyment!

We offer two general types of boards; serving/charcuterie boards and cutting/chopping boards. Your new board will be labeled as to its specific type, or you can use this rule of thumb: if your board has epoxy resin as part or all of its construction, it’s a serving or charcuterie board. If your board is constructed of solid wood, then it has the ability to be used as a cutting board.

That being said, only edge- or end-grain cutting boards are designed to stand up to rigorous use with kitchen knives. Light-duty slicing is fine on a face-grain board, but heavy duty chopping and cutting should be avoided in order to extend the life of your board.

We do not suggest cutting or chopping on epoxy resin boards. Epoxy is a fairly hearty material, but has the ability over time to show marks from repeated knife use. Less sharp knives like cheese slicers and serving implements are no problem for epoxy resin boards.

Another consideration is how to care for your board. All of the boards we offer are 100% food-safe, whether constructed of solid wood or incorporating epoxy resin. After use, we recommend hand washing your board with a mild soap. Typically, a quick wipe with a damp cloth will be all that’s required. We do not recommend soaking your board in the sink or putting it through the dishwasher as this will lead to warping or cracking.

In order to maintain your solid wood board in top condition, we recommend an occasional maintenance treatment. If your board is looking dried out, the simplest method of treating your board is to wipe it down with a damp cloth, allow it to dry, and then apply a light coat of Mr. Bear’s Board Butter. Mr. Bear’s Board Butter is food-safe and is an excellent protectant. Let the butter stand for 5 minutes, then wipe off any extra. That’s all it takes to keep your board looking great and to ensure years of service.

You will receive a tin of Mr. Bear’s Board Butter with the purchase of your board. Additional tins can be purchased for $5.00.

The epoxy resin on your board is essentially maintenance-free and just needs to be stored away from UV light to ensure optical clarity over the years.
