Box Elder

Box elder is a light, pale wood that often features striking, natural color variations, ranging from creamy whites and light yellows to pinks and reds, with occasional darker streaks or flecks. This color variation is especially pronounced in the wood's heartwood, which can have a vibrant, reddish hue. The grain of box elder is typically straight, with a fine to medium texture, making it easy to work with for carving, turning, and finishing. Although not as dense or durable as some hardwoods, box elder is still a versatile choice for projects such as furniture, cabinetry, and decorative items. Its unique color patterns and relatively low cost make it an appealing option for creative woodworking projects, especially when its distinctive appearance is desired.

Olivewood

Olivewood is a highly prized and visually captivating hardwood known for its rich golden-brown color with striking dark streaks and a dramatic, wavy grain pattern. The wood's intricate, swirling designs give it a distinctive, exotic appearance that makes it a favorite choice for fine furniture, woodturning, and handcrafted items like bowls, cutting boards, and utensils. Olivewood is dense and durable, offering excellent resistance to wear and making it ideal for both functional and decorative pieces. Its smooth texture and ease of finishing allow it to showcase its natural beauty, which deepens over time, giving olivewood items a lasting appeal and timeless elegance.

Spalted Birch

Spalted birch is a distinctive and visually striking wood known for its unique appearance, created by fungal activity that results in dark, intricate patterns and streaks throughout the wood. The natural coloration can range from creamy white to pale yellow with black or brown markings, giving it a beautiful, almost abstract look. These patterns, known as spalting, add depth and character to the wood, making it highly prized for decorative woodworking and furniture pieces. Despite its aesthetic appeal, spalted birch remains relatively easy to work with, offering a smooth texture and good strength. It is commonly used in craft projects, custom furniture, and woodturning, where its visual impact is the focal point.

Black Walnut

Black walnut is a highly sought-after hardwood known for its rich, deep brown to dark chocolate color, often featuring striking lighter or purplish streaks. The wood has a straight, tight grain with occasional waves or curls that enhance its beauty and character. Black walnut is prized for both its durability and workability, offering a smooth texture that is easy to carve, shape, and finish. It is commonly used for fine furniture, cabinetry, and high-end woodturning projects due to its luxurious appearance and strong, stable nature. Its striking visual appeal, combined with its strength and ability to take on a range of finishes, makes black walnut a premium choice for fine woodworking.

Hard Maple

Hard maple, also known as sugar maple, is a dense, strong hardwood prized for its light, creamy white to pale reddish-brown color, often with subtle streaks of darker grain. It has a fine, consistent grain pattern and a smooth texture, making it highly versatile and easy to work with. Hard maple is known for its durability, resistance to abrasion, and stability, which makes it an excellent choice for heavy-use applications like flooring, cabinetry, furniture, and kitchen items such as cutting boards and butcher blocks. The wood also takes stain and finish well, allowing it to be customized for a range of aesthetic preferences, while maintaining its strength and long-lasting appeal.

Plum

Plum is a unique and highly attractive hardwood known for its rich, deep reddish-brown to purple hues, often with darker streaks or occasional lighter spots. The wood has a fine, even grain with a smooth texture, making it ideal for crafting fine furniture, cabinetry, and turned items like bowls and pens. Plum lumber is relatively dense and hard, providing both durability and resistance to wear, while its stunning color and distinctive grain patterns make it a striking choice for artistic woodworking projects. Though it can be somewhat challenging to find, plum wood is valued for its beauty and workability, adding a touch of elegance to any piece.

Cherry

Cherry is a fine-grained, reddish-brown hardwood that darkens over time, developing a rich, warm patina as it ages. Known for its smooth texture and subtle grain patterns, it features a straight, uniform texture with occasional swirls or knots, adding character and elegance to its appearance. Cherry is highly valued for its workability, as it is relatively easy to cut, shape, and finish, making it a popular choice for fine furniture, cabinetry, and decorative woodwork. The wood is also prized for its durability, holding up well to wear while maintaining its beauty, making it a long-lasting choice for heirloom-quality pieces.

White Oak

White oak is a durable, dense hardwood known for its strength and versatility. It has a pale to medium brown color with subtle grain patterns, often featuring light golden or grayish hues. The wood is highly resistant to moisture, making it an ideal choice for outdoor furniture, flooring, cabinetry, and marine applications like boat building. White oak is also prized for its workability, as it takes stain and finish well, enhancing its natural beauty. Its pronounced grain and texture make it a popular choice in both traditional and contemporary design, providing both aesthetic appeal and long-lasting performance.
